California Proposition 65 — Warning Information

At Wood Fire Home, we believe in being upfront with our customers. If you live in California, you may notice a Proposition 65 warning on some of the fire features, patio heaters, grills, and related products we sell. This page explains what that warning means, why it appears, and what it does (and does not) say about the products you love.

What is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65 — officially the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 — is a California law. It requires businesses to provide a clear and reasonable warning before knowingly exposing anyone in California to chemicals the state has identified as causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The state maintains a list of more than 900 such chemicals and updates it regularly.

The law applies to a very wide range of everyday products, which is why you will see these warnings on everything from electronics and furniture to building materials and outdoor appliances.

Why might I see a warning on a Wood Fire Home product?

Many outdoor living products can fall within the scope of Proposition 65 for reasons such as:

  • Combustion by-products. Gas and wood-burning fire pits, fireplaces, gas logs, and patio heaters can produce combustion by-products such as carbon monoxide during normal use.
  • Materials and components. Brass valves, fittings, fasteners, and certain metals, coatings, and finishes can contain trace amounts of listed chemicals such as lead.
  • Manufacturer-provided warnings. Where a manufacturer supplies a Proposition 65 warning for a product, we pass that warning along to you.

What the warning looks like

A typical Proposition 65 warning takes this form:

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including those produced by the combustion of fuels and substances such as lead, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Does a warning mean the product is unsafe?

Not necessarily. A Proposition 65 warning is not the same as a recall, a safety defect, or a violation of any product-safety standard. The California warning thresholds are set deliberately low and are often far more conservative than federal standards. A warning simply means a product may expose you to a listed chemical, and that California law requires us to tell you so. The products we carry are sourced from reputable manufacturers and are intended to be safe when installed and used as directed.

How to reduce exposure

As with any fuel-burning appliance, always follow the manufacturer's installation and operating instructions, ensure adequate ventilation for combustion products, and have gas appliances installed by a licensed professional in accordance with your local codes.
